Overview

If someone asked me what the most annoying part of vanlife is, I’d have to say awnings. Yes, you heard that right. Give me a flat tyre or lack of toilet any day. The bane of my life is dealing with tarps.

You either spend a small fortune on a huge, roof-mounted one, only for it to be toppled by high winds or pulled down when you drive off forgetting it’s still attached (yes, I’ve done it before). Or you get a cheap, flimsy awning that blows away in the breeze or completely falls apart at the slightest wobble.

If you’ve ever bought yourself a tarp for your van, you’ll know exactly what I mean. You end up sitting inside your van when bad weather hits just to avoid putting it up.

But luckily for us, Florian and Marcel have not only solved this problem, but they’ve also designed and created an epic solution.

The Wildside Campervan Tarp

This creative duo has created the first adjustable, weather-resistant van tarp that is 21 feet long. Not only that, but this tarp doesn’t need to attach to your van, so you can drive off without pulling it to the ground while your friends are still sitting under it (I’ve apologized so many times).

And although the awning is huge, it folds away into a compressible kit bag that’s the size of a standard duffle. No more taking up precious storage space with bulky awning covers and stakes.

Stand-alone or attachable

Whereas most awnings either attach to your van or are standalone, the Wildside Campervan Tarp is both. It adjusts to attach to any size van with very little effort. Or, you can set it up to be standalone, giving a massive area of cover when it’s raining to sit outside and enjoy the view.

Multi-functional setup

My favourite feature is the multi-functional setup. When the weather is decent, you can set it up with a flat top to shade from the sun but allow the breeze to pass through. As soon as the weather cools down or the heavens open, drop the sides to give more cover from the wind and rain.

Eco-Friendly Design

Sustainability is a huge part of vanlife and no one wants to buy yet another piece of gear that does nothing to help the environment.

So Florian and Marcel make their Wildside Tarp out of recycled PET bottles. Giving you a cool way to shelter while helping to keep plastic out of the oceans. But don’t let the eco-friendly badge fool you, the tarp is still impressively strong and will live up to the harshest weather conditions you can subject it to.

Back The Kickstarter Campaign

If you’re like me and can’t wait to get your hands on this campervan awning, you can head to Florian and Marcel’s Kickstarter campaign and pledge your support. They’ve already doubled their original fundraising goal and their first round of delivery is set for February of next year.
